Building on Mars? Sure looks like it, except this otherworldly scene is from a stone quarry in Azarshahr, Iran.
The material here is red travertine, a sedimentary stone hardened from heat and water of underground geothermal springs.
Travertine is usually beige - and is one of three materials the Romans used to build their empire. The other two are brick and concrete.
As we plan to build on Mars, it’s helps to understand how we build here on Earth. Quarrying stone is a complex process which involves many steps which we will need to replicate on Mars someday.
