Clearing up doubts about veganism, breast cancer and mammograms👇a must read from @anjalimalikmd
Does being vegan mean we will never get breast cancer? NO, being vegan DOES NOT mean you will never develop breast cancer, it just helps lower your risk. NO diet eliminates the risk of breast cancer, & annual screening mammogram is the best chance of EARLY detection of breast cancer to incease survival and decrease complications.
Are mammograms harmful, or even deadly? NO, the radiation and compression from annual mammograms is SAFE, and as I said above, mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer EARLY.
Being a female & aging are the top two risk factors for developing breast cancer, & everyone woman has ATLEAST a 1/8 chance of developing breast cancer OVER the course of her lifetime. Being vegan/vegetarian has been shown to reduce the risk of overall cancers, & a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in fat can have an effect on women who develop postmenopausal breast cancer, but again, it DID NOT lower the risk to zero! So please, if you are a fellow follower of #plantbased lifestyle, DO NOT skip your cancer screenings!
Annual mammogram offers a 40% decreased mortality for women ages 40-74. (Pan-Canadian study 2014) Breast cancers detected early (stages 0-1) have 99-100% survivors at 5 years than versus 27% at stage 4. ( @americancancersociety Facts & Figures 2019 @nationalcancerinstituteseer Program). Mammograms are safe - the radiation dose is similar to that of a transcontinental flight. While the compression is uncomfortable, it’s temporary, and, no pain, no gain, right??
