🌍 SpaceX launched Starlink 👏👏👏 Here's what it is and why it's important 👇
.
1️⃣ Starlink is a constellation of 12,000 communications satellites designed to provide high-speed internet

2️⃣ The satellites are about 550km above the Earth's surface and will provide virtually global coverage over their several year lifespan

3️⃣ Each satellite has a krypton powered propulsion system which and autonomous guidance which can be used to avoid space debris (sorry, Superman, you can't come to Earth)

4️⃣ As each satellite nears its end, it will de-orbit and burn up in the atmosphere ❔ First, what problem is Starlink actually solving? There are billions of people still without reliable internet access. It's expensive connecting rural and the poorest areas with cables, so they can fix this problem by installing a receiver and connecting to Starlink.
.
🔴 Why is it important for SpaceX's future? SpaceX makes money launching other government's and companies' satellites. But this income isn't always predictable, it's time consuming to make these kinds of deals and things can go wrong. All of this jeopardises SpaceX's future plans to colonize Mars.
.
💰 So Starlink gives SpaceX another income stream (and a consistent one). This potentially means billions of dollars coming in once they've launched the full constellation (12,000 satellites) which will help them fund Starship and future Mars missions!🚀
.
.
.
💬 If you could, what would you use Starlink for? Let me know in the comments?

🚀 The space race is ON! Read below for how I got to these figures 👇
•
⚠️ Disclaimer: I'm comparing Starship v Blue Moon because this is how each company proposes to get PEOPLE to the Moon. Another comparison is between the boosters (Super Heavy v New Glenn) but this is not strictly that comparison, though the launch cost includes those.

1️⃣ First launch - this is the anticipated first ever launch/test of the above. Meaning an estimate for both Super Heavy AND Starship doing an orbital test as well as New Glenn AND Blue Moon.
2️⃣ Cost - this is the cost to NASA or another paying customer. SpaceX figure is based on research from Reddit user BrangdonJ and Blue Origin cost is my own, assuming that New Glenn is priced competitively with Falcon Heavy.
3️⃣ Crew - I know Starship will eventually carry 100 people but that is for a FUTURE version that will go to Mars. We'll see this probably around 2028/2030. So I anticipate the lunar Starship mission will max out at 20 (like the flyby, if that still happens). Blue Origin are expected to be cautious and will most likely use similar numbers to what we've seen before for crewed missions to the ISS. Bigger versions will come later.
•

🚀😍 Don't destroy the Earth, reuse your rockets!

Reposting this awesome older video showing the first ever drone ship landing! 😄 Who'd love to have this as their background? 👏🤔 There's so much to this simple video:
1️⃣ The booster floating down gracefully and correcting itself
2️⃣ The droneship waiting patiently against the beautiful blue sea
3️⃣ The landing legs deploying at nearly the very last second (but just in time)
4️⃣ THAT orange reflection on the water of the flames 💬 What's your favourite part of this? 👇 Comment below and tag someone who would love this too!

😍 Awesome post by @marstronauts - here's the repost 👇
⠀

This could be a really utopian image of a futuristic Mars base.⠀
⠀
Can this happen? I think so, because water on Mars is a bit unpredictable in the sense of how it will flow. Once we start terraforming the planet, we could face the challenge of rising sea levels and we will need to figure out a way to solve it.⠀
⠀
Does that sound familiar?⠀
⠀
The same thing is happening here on Earth. It will probably happen sooner here, but this is also a reason why we should explore. We never know what we face and we never know what we will find. Maybe we can save Earth with currently unknown knowledge!

🚀🤔 Are THESE timelines realistic? 👇
•
1️⃣ The first humans in over 50 years arrive on the lunar surface and set up a base on the south pole. They do short scouting trips with the aim of finding water ice to turn into fuel. Population: 5-10.
2️⃣ The first temporary habs are set up with power, launch pads and an ISRU facility that is producing rocket fuel from water ice. Multiple missions arrive at the Moon every few months with different companies and governments taking part. Population: up to 50
3️⃣ With power, fuel and transportation taken care of, the first permanent bases are set up on the Moon. These form a village composed of both scientists and entrepreneurs enabling humans to travel to Mars. Population: up to 100.
4️⃣ Future humans have built domes around these villages and have learned to utilise helium-3 found on the Moon, allowing an almost self-sustaining colony. Population: 1,000+
•
💬 What do you think? Tell me why you think each step will be difficult to do in this timeframe and let's discuss some solutions! 👇

🚀 Which do you wish to experience?
•
1️⃣ Space tourism 🤳 - expected later this year according to Jeff Bezos... Do you think it could happen?
2️⃣ Moon base 🧀 - everyone's heard me talk about it already but the aim for this is 2024. They could actually do it BEFORE SpaceX. Don't underestimate Bezos (he has his bad qualities but I just mean as a businessman).
3️⃣ Space habitats 🌌 - this one is way out but it's something they're serious about enabling. Probably not until the next century though...what do you think?
•
💬 Anyways, it's a very exciting time for anyone interested in human space exploration, especially how we can make it sustainable with business. Let me know what you think of these plans - leave a comment! 👇

🚀 Want to live on Earth or live on Mars?
•
😍 @aispacefactory are a startup that is doing amazing work to enable humans to live on other worlds. Here's an interesting quote from an interview (link in bio) with their CEO @david_malott 👇
•
🤔 "The biggest obstacle to building in space is that construction materials are extremely expensive to launch. At a cost of $100 million to land a 5-ton lunar payload, an average Earth home weighing 50-tons would cost one billion dollars and require 10 roundtrips to the Moon to deliver. For the same cost, we could land 50 robotic rovers and build a lunar village—if we learn to harvest materials from the surface."
•
💬 Excited? You can follow their progress on their Instagram and watch them build TERA (left image) later this year 👏

🤯 Would you live in space?
•
🚀🌑 Jeff Bezos unveiled his and Blue Origin's vision for humanity's future: to have Earth only used for residential and light industry and move all heavy, polluting industries to space.
•
🤔 I'll share my thoughts in the coming days. I'm especially keen to hear what fellow environmentalists think of his plans. Because he thinks that, to save the Earth, we cannot delay going into space. Otherwise we run out of resources here which will make life very difficult for everyone. •

🤔 Why should we be concerned about space debris?
•
⚠️ Disclaimer: yes, I know satellites are not that size! This post is about ensuring future access to space, it is not a post against space exploration. Please read in full before commenting 🙂
•
🌍 The above image isn't supposed to show the size of space debris but rather how much of it there is, mainly because we don't do anything currently to recycle/remove it. With private companies like SpaceX, OneWeb, Telesat and now Amazon planning on launching satellite constellations, we're going to see the risk of space debris go up.
•
❔ So, what is space debris and why should we worry about it? 👇
•
1️⃣ Space debris is any natural ☄️ or artificial 🛰️ object in Earth orbit (ie GEO and LEO) including asteroids, old satellites, broken parts, rocket stages, etc. The ring in the above image shows objects in GEO and everything closely orbiting the Earth is LEO.
2️⃣ Out of the nearly 18,000 man-made objects in space, less than 2,000 are actual operational satellites. When satellites stop working, we don't do anything with them so they stay in Earth orbit.
3️⃣ Combined with the natural debris orbiting Earth, there's an increasing risk of collisions with spacecraft (which have happened in the past). Just in the last few weeks, a suspected collision meant a satellite in GEO stopped working and became adrift.
4️⃣ Yes, some debris in LEO burns up in the atmosphere, but any debris in GEO will not (or it will take a very long time, making collisions more likely). This is important especially because that ring of the debris in the image is over the equator, which is used for missions to the Moon and other planets.
•
🤔 So what can we do about this? We need to remove or recycle old satellites and debris. Thankfully, there are now people working on this exact problem 👏👇
•
One of the pioneers of this is @astroscale founded by Nobu Okada and I've just published an interview with him. If you're interested in this problem and how we can solve it, definitely check out the interview! Link is in the bio 🚀

🤔 Who will get to the Moon first? 🚀🌑
•
1️⃣ SpaceX are working on Starship which will be used to transport cargo and humans around Earth, to the Moon, Mars and even beyond. They're testing the Raptor engine which will be used in Starship. Expect the first orbital test later this year or early next year! 👨‍🚀👩‍🚀 Crew: around 100.
2️⃣ Blue Origin have shown a lot of interest in going to the Moon with Bezos wanting to build a base there within 5 years. This Blue Moon lander in the image doesn't actually show a capability to transport humans but it's likely that a future version will have it. 👩‍🚀👨‍🚀 Crew: unknown, probably up to 7
3️⃣ Boeing, an old school space player, proposed plans for the lunar gateway which included this lunar lander. It wasn't part of NASA's plans but with NASA asking for commercial support to get things and people to the Moon, it's likely Boeing will be working on something. 👨‍🚀👩‍🚀 Crew: up to 6
4️⃣ Lockheed Martin, also old school, have similar plans for a lunar lander which they shared an updated version of recently. 👩‍🚀👨‍🚀 Crew: up to 6

It wasn't part of NASA's plans but with NASA asking for commercial support to get things and people to the Moon, it's likely Boeing will be working on something. 👨‍🚀👩‍🚀 Crew: up to 6 4️⃣ Lockheed Martin, also old school, have similar plans for a lunar lander which they shared an updated version of recently. 👩‍🚀👨‍🚀 Crew: up to 6 • 💬 Which one do you think will get to the Moon first? • • • #spaceexploration #mars #martian #spacetravel #nasa #spacex #rocketscience #elonmusk #redplanet #solarsystem #spaceshuttle #spacephotos #exploration #astronaut #astronauts #blueorigin #scifidaily #cosmos #spacefacts #interstellar #science #spaceexplorer #spacestation

🤯 Could it happen?
•
🚀 I did this just for fun. I don't really know if SpaceX are working on any kind of advanced technology (highly doubt it) but at a certain point we'll need something more efficient than rocket engine, in order to move beyond our solar system and travel to other star systems.
•
🤪 Enough fantasising for today, back to serious, realistic space stuff tomorrow with more interviews coming this week 🙌

🤔 Who wants this future?
•
Space habitats, Mars colonies and bases on the Moon 🚀🚀🚀
•
1️⃣ Space habs: we actually have a space hab already: the ISS. It's obviously nothing like the above but it's a place for humans to live and work in space. Startups like Orbit Fab and Made In Space are making it possible for us to eventually have much larger space structures! 😃
👉 Read the Orbit Fab interview on the site for more
•
2️⃣ Mars bases: this is something I've talked about a lot already! Though it's difficult to do much until we have cheaper access to space which companies like SpaceX are helping with. In the meantime, we need ways to build on Mars and ensure we can survive when we get there, which AI SpaceFactory and Cemvita are making incredible progress with this 👏
👉 Read the interviews with @aispacefactory and @cemvita on the site 👏
•
3️⃣ Moon bases: this is generating a lot of interest lately with multiple countries and companies interested in building a Moon base 😃 I'll have more to share on this soon. To help this, we need more people participating in space and you can read about a few startups making this more probable like Open Cosmos and Oxford Space Systems (and of course SpaceX).
👉 Read the interviews on the site and let me know what you think 😄

🚀🤔 Are these timelines realistic? 👇
•
1️⃣ The first Martian base is set up with power and other essentials. Population: a few hundred.
2️⃣ Multiple bases and an early colony begins to form. Population: up to 10,000
3️⃣ A full-fledged self-sustaining colony with multiple cities. Population: up to 100,000
4️⃣ Terraformed Mars with huge cities and seas covering large parts of the planet. Population: a few billion?
•
💬 What do you think? Tell me why you think each step will be difficult to do in this timeframe and let's discuss some solutions! 👇

🚀 How much will you pay to fly to space?
•
🙌 Congrats to Blue Origin on another successful launch and landing and, remember, the future is reusability! The above video edited by @space.bandits features the first landing by @blueorigin and a New Glenn animation by Hazeygrayart (find them on YouTube).
•
🤔 Today's mission was the 11th flight for New Shepard using the third iteration of the booster-capsule. In the capsule on the flight were 38 research payloads 🔬 including a 3D printing experiment that could help understand how we can build lunar bases.
•
💬 The fourth version is expected to fly tourists later this year! The question is, can they scale this up to an orbital rocket 🚀🌍? We'll find that out too with hopefully some updates on New Glenn next year (think of it as in the middle of the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy).
