The stunning beautiful Butterfly Nebula
The bright clusters and nebulae of planet Earth's night sky are often named for flowers or insects. Though its wingspan covers over 3 light-years, NGC 6302 is no exception. With an estimated surface temperature of about 250,000 degrees C, the dying central star of this particular planetary nebula has become exceptionally hot, shining brightly in ultraviolet light but hidden from direct view by a dense torus of dust. This sharp close-up of the dying star's nebula was recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope and is presented here in reprocessed colors. Cutting across a bright cavity of ionized gas, the dust torus surrounding the central star is near the center of this view, almost edge-on to the line-of-sight. Molecular hydrogen has been detected in the hot star's dusty cosmic shroud. NGC 6302 lies about 4,000 light-years away in the arachnologically correct constellation of the Scorpion (Scorpius) 💫✨🌙 #space #solarsystem #cosmos #spacetravel #nebula #nasa #iss #deepspace #interstellar #spacewalk #explore #science #earth #spacex #elonmusk

This iconic photo is of Astronaut Edward Fincke👨🏼‍🚀on the third out of four scheduled spacewalks back in 2004 on the Expedition 9 International Space Station mission. The stunning view of a cloudy earth lingers in the background🌎✨Astronaut Fincke was a flight engineer and science officer on this mission; and in this image he is seen wearing a Russian Orlan spacesuit.🇷🇺
———————————————————
On this spacewalk Astronaut Edward Fincke and partner, Cosmonaut Gennady Padalka spent 4.5 hours performing Extravehicular activities. They were tasked with exchanging experiments, as well as with the installation of hardware⛓that would later on assist in the operation of a device known as Automated Transfer Vehicle (AVT).📡
———————————————————
What is He Up To Now?
———————————————————
Astronaut Edward Fincke will be one of three other astronauts to fly aboard the very first manned Starliner Space capsule flight up to the ISS! 🛰(Hopefully later on this year). This spacecraft along with Crew Dragon will mark the beginning of the US’s endeavor to start and continue to launch humans from American Soil by American designed and built spacecraft! 🚀🇺🇸

NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless floating above the clouds ☁️
-
This image was taken on February 7, 1984, from the cabin of the Space Shuttle Challenger and shows astronaut Bruce McCandless participating in the first untethered extravehicular activity (EVA) using the manned maneuvering unit (MMU).
-
On February 7, 1984, four days after launching on Space Shuttle Challenger, the MMU was taken out for its first EVA. The unit featured redundancy to protect against failure of individual systems. It was designed to fit over the life-support system backpack of the Space Shuttle extravehicular mobility unit and to adapt to astronauts with different arm lengths.
-
The MMU used gaseous nitrogen as its propellant based on 24 nozzle thrusters placed at different locations on the MMU. To operate the propulsion system, the astronaut used their fingertips to manipulate joysticks at the ends of the unit's two arms.
-
This was not the first attempt at an independent maneuvering unit. In 1966, the US Air Force developed an astronaut maneuvering unit (AMU), a self-contained rocket pack very similar to the MMU. The AMU was to be tested during Project Gemini on a spacewalk by Eugene Cernan in June 1966, but that test was canceled. Cernan was so tired and overheated that his helmet visor fogged.

A great illustration of a vapour cone forming. Vapour cones occur when an object moving at near-transonic speeds in moist air breaks the sound barrier and causes the formation of a small cloud of condensed water as the supersonic shockwaves move across the body of the object. The footage is of the launch of Apollo 11 on July 16, 1969.

Space Shuttle Columbia returning home from STS-1 🌎
-
STS-1 (Space Transportation System-1) was the first orbital spaceflight of NASA's Space Shuttle program. The first orbiter, Columbia, launched on 12 April, 1981 and returned on April 14th, 54.5 hours later, having orbited the Earth 36 times. Columbia carried a crew of two – mission commander John W. Young and pilot Robert L. Crippen. It was the first American manned space flight since the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project in 1975.
-
The launch occurred on the 20th anniversary of the first-ever human spaceflight. This was a coincidence rather than a celebration of the anniversary; a technical problem had prevented STS-1 from launching two days earlier, as was planned.

Say Hello to ESA Astronaut Alexander Gerst🇩🇪! In this image he was in the middle of a 6 hour long spacewalk🚀along with his partner Astronaut Reid Wiseman.👨🏼‍🚀 Their task was to relocate a cooling pump that had failed in its operation, to the external stowage. They were also tasked to install gear that's purpose was to provide back up power to outside robotics equipment.⛓️
—————————————————
A brief history of Spacewalks:
The very first person to go on a spacewalk was Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov🇷🇺. This took place on the 18th of March in 1965 & It only lasted 10 minutes. Leonov encountered some problems in the re-entry into the Voskhod spacecraft🛰 and he got stuck sideways. Russia didn’t conduct another spacewalk until 4 years later! In 1984 Cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to go for a spacewalk. This was during the Soyuz-T-12 mission. NASA’s first spacewalk was conducted by Astronaut Ed White👨🏻‍🚀, who became the first American🇺🇸 to go one a spacewalk on the 3rd of June 1965 on the Gemini 4 mission which lasted lasted 23 minutes.

Spacesuit Berkut (Беркут, golden eagle). 🦅
The first #spacesuit for spacewalking, all spacesuits before were only for the case of emergency inside a #spacecraft.

First American spacewalk conducted by Ed White in 1965 🇺🇸
-
During the Gemini 4 mission on June 3, 1965, Ed White became the first American to conduct a spacewalk. The spacewalk started at 3:45 p.m. EDT on the third orbit when White opened the hatch and used the hand-held manuevering oxygen-jet gun to push himself out of the capsule.
-
The EVA started over the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii and lasted 23 minutes, ending over the Gulf of Mexico. Initially, White propelled himself to the end of the 8-meter tether and back to the spacecraft three times using the hand-held gun. After the first three minutes the fuel ran out and White maneuvered by twisting his body and pulling on the tether.
-
In this photograph taken by Commander James McDivitt taken early in the EVA over a cloud-covered Pacific Ocean, the maneuvering gun is visible in White's right hand. The visor of his helmet is gold-plated to protect him from the unfiltered rays of the sun.

Don’t look down! This is a scary view from the International Space Station, taken on a spacewalk. I’d pay a lot of money to experience this, but I’d also wet my pants if I looked at the Earth below me, so on second thought maybe not. 🌎

“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.” - Henry David Thoreau
-
In this picture David R. Scott performs a stand-up extravehicular activity (EVA) on March 6, 1969, the fourth day of the Apollo 9 Earth-orbital mission. The docked Apollo 9 Command and Service Modules (CSM) and Lunar Module (LM) are visible with Earth in the background. Scott, command module pilot, is standing in the open hatch of the Command Module (CM). Astronaut Russell L. Schweickart, lunar module pilot, took this photograph of Scott from the porch of the LM. Inside the LM was astronaut James A. McDivitt, Apollo 9 commander.
-
Apollo 9 was the third crewed mission in the United States Apollo space program, the second to be sent into orbit by a Saturn V rocket, and the first flight of the CSM with the LM. Flown in Low Earth Orbit, its major purposes were to qualify the LM for lunar orbit operations and to show that the CSM could separate and move well apart, before rendezvousing and docking again, as they would have to do on subsequent lunar landing missions. During the ten-day mission, they tested systems and procedures critical to landing on the Moon, including the LM engines, backpack life support systems, navigation systems, and docking maneuvers.
-
After launching on March 3, 1969, the crew performed the first crewed flight of a LM, the first docking and extraction of a LM, one two-person spacewalk (EVA), and the second docking of two crewed spacecraft—two months after the Soviets performed a spacewalk crew transfer between Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5. The mission concluded on March 13 and was a full success. It proved the LM worthy of crewed spaceflight, thus setting the stage for the dress rehearsal for the lunar landing, Apollo 10, before the ultimate goal, landing on the Moon.

Space Shuttle Discovery on crawler-transporter 🚀
-
Discovery is a veteran of spaceflight and deserves more appreciation than it usually gets. Not only was it the world's most-flown Space Shuttle and spacecraft with a total of 39 completed missions during its operational life, but you could also always rely on it in times of tragedy.
-
Discovery was the first shuttle to launch after each of the shuttle program's tragedies, the January 1986 explosion of Challenger and the February 2003 destruction of Columbia as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere. Each disaster took the lives of all seven astronauts aboard. In both cases, the shuttle program took several years to get back on its feet.
-
The Discovery is comparable to a good friend, who in times of tragedy is there to bring joy and to show that it's not the end, that the tragedy is just the end of a chapter, so a new one can begin.

Mother Earth from the International Space Station. 🌎💫 Our planet is the perfect place, and only place, for life as we know it. But human activities are damaging Earth faster than it can recover. Here are a few ways you can make your life a little more green and help our beautiful planet.
.
➤ Use public transport
➤ Reduce your energy consumption (turn off the lights, unplug your devices, check the Energy Star rating when purchasing appliances)
➤ Eat less meat
➤ Compost
➤ BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag/Bottle)
➤ Skip the straw
➤ Support ecotourism
➤ Reduce, reuse, recycle

Space Shuttle Atlantis on launch pad 39A at the NASA Kennedy Space Center.
-
Atlantis was the fourth shuttle constructed and the last one to fly into space. It performed well in 25 years of service, flying 33 missions that included secret missions for the U.S. military, ferrying astronauts to and from space stations and launching several probes.
-
The shuttle gained a reputation of being the unsung workhorse of the shuttle fleet because it has flown so many missions bringing crews to space stations and satellites into orbit. Atlantis flew to the Mir space station seven times and to the International Space Station eleven times. It also has the distinction of flying the final shuttle mission before the fleet was retired in 2011.
-
Atlantis was named after a ship that did work for Massachusetts' Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute between 1930 and 1966. The sailing ship was the first to image the ocean floor using electronic sounding devices.

NASA astronaut Robert L. Curbeam, Jr. during the first spacewalk of the STS-116 mission, 12 December, 2006 ☁️
-
The STS-116 mission to the ISS was the most complex mission of the shuttle assembly flights. Seven shuttle astronauts and three station astronauts worked closely together to reconfigure the station's electrical power and cooling systems. The station had been running on a temporary electrical system since 1998. The new, permanent configuration incorporated power from the P4 solar arrays that were installed during STS-115. Discovery also delivered and installed the 1820-kg (≈4012 lbs) P5 truss element that extended the left side of the overall truss, allowing the P4 solar panels to rotate and it set the stage for the relocation of the P6 solar arrays on a later assembly flight.
-
Before any rewiring could be done, half of the station's P6 solar array had to be folded up on flight day 5. To achieve the new power setup, ground control shut down the entire U.S. portion of the station in stages. This complex procedure has never before been attempted.
