Before @ava became a full-time director, she was a PR powerhouse. In 1999, DuVernay opened her own agency where she raked in clients like HBO and Warner Bros. At the time, there was no precedent for a black woman being successful in film commercially, so she made her films on the side. For her first five films, she kept her day job. It was only when she went to #sundance as a director that she thought she should focus on film-making full time: "And that’s what I did."
