A few spiders in the Portland area. The largest, the giant house spiders, are not native. None of these spiders have bites with medical significance. Any bite from one of them would not ordinarily result in a visit to the doctor. Sometimes bacteria can enter through any break in the surface of the skin, causing secondary infections, but we all get little cuts and such all the time. I’ve spent a good amount of my life outside around these spiders. It’s inconceivable to me that one would bite me unless I accidentally pinned it down without realizing it. We would all bite too, if we found ourselves in that situation, as would any animal. Even plants defend themselves in amazing ways but don’t go out of their way to harm us.
